Staithes Lifeboat Weekend, Regatta and Saltburn Folk Festival

There is a whole host of exciting activities in the lovely north yorkshire seaside villages and towns close to argument cottage and Guisborough this weekend.

I love the village of Staithes and this weekend it is their annual Lifeboat fundraising weekend for the RNLI. Runswick Bay also has events to entertain visitors and help raise funds.

Nearby at Whitby, famous for the Captain Cook and Dracula links, there is also the annual Regatta .

The Regatta 3 day event hosts a display by the famous Red Arrows, a Battle of Britain Memorial air display featuring the historic Hurricane and Spitfire planes. Rowing races, army and navy displays, childrens fun, a spectacular firework display and much, much more!

The Red Arrows Display Team

Nearby at Saltburn there is the annual Saltburn Folk Festival, you can see a whole variety of wonderful performers from Vin Garbutt to the Mighty Zulu Nation Theatre Company, craft stalls, workshops and artwork.

Truly a great weekend of activities is taking place close to argument cottage, Guisborough. Make sure you find time to enjoy the great events, pretty coastal villages and towns and beautiful North Yorkshire Moors, which is resplendent with purple heather at the moment.

The New Year

Welcome to Argument Cottage blog in 2011. It has been a long, cold, snowy winter at the cottage but things are slowly coming back to normal now. The days are getting longer and slightly warmer thank goodness. The new year brings exciting things for the cottage and me personally.

The cottage is having some maintenance done and will be in good shape for the year to come and ready to welcome guests from far and wide.

I am going to Japan for Elizabeth Argument, my step-daughers’, wedding. It is so exciting and a real trip of a lifetime. I will be going to Nagoya for the wedding then Lake Biwa before moving onto to Tokyo and Mount Fuji!!

Wow I can’t wait.

I will be putting photos on for you to enjoy as the trip progresses, my only reservation is the flight there and back.

Anyway more to follow in the coming days and weeks so keep looking.

Don’t forget that the cottage has special offers between February and the end of March; £300 per week from saturday to saturday. If you are interested then please get in touch on 07890 743480 or email maria@argument.org.uk. I look forward to seeing you in 2011.

Thank you Maria

snow, snow and more snow at argument cottage, guisborough

another winter wonderland at Argument Cottage Guisborough!!

The snow has fallen again over argument cottage, guisborough and the north yorkshire moors………it is truly beautiful. We took a drive over the moors to Danby and Lealholm, where I bought some wood, kindling and horsecarrots……….not really, horse chestnuts they were. They went down a treat on the wood fire later that night!

Coming back home on the moor road I spotted that Scaling Dam was frozen over. I had never seen this before. It looked so calm and peaceful unlike the times when the boats are out there under sail. The sky along the moor road was truly beautiful as the sun was setting.

When we got back to Guisborough, I took a walk along the path to Gisborough Priory. As you can see the sun was setting through the arches and was amazing………..It is at times like this that I am delighted to be living in this wonderful town and stunning area.

Eggs……..

Eggs………..a fun, entertaining, short promotional video for argument cottage

During the summer of ’10 a group of creative ‘artists’…….led by the inspirational Graham Shackleton of www.shackletonphoto.co.uk set about putting together a ‘masterpiece’ of visual imagery using the thematic perspective; EGGS!!

Maria Wilcock of Argument Cottage Guisborough worked in partnership with Graham, Denise Nesbitt, her ‘girls’……six free range chickens and Lisa Wilcock.

Getting ready for guests is never easy. Especially when you have such exacting standards as at Argument Cottage. The exclusive welcome pack contains wonderful extras such as wine, fair trade products and of course the all important free range EGGS.

The fun story is Maria rushing to get ready for guests and the process of getting the much needed eggs to her in time for your arrival…………..She has to put down the Boro book, ‘The Road to Eindhoven’ and rush to meet Lisa who is delivering the eggs from Denise…….Lisa goes all round Guisborough into Gisborough Priory, market and shops before bumping into Maria at Cafe Neros…….phew just in time.

How do you like your eggs? Why not come and stay at Argument Cottage in Guisborough to enjoy a wonderful relaxing break and a splendid breakfast to boot??

Thank you for taking the short five minutes out of your day to watch the little video. And once again special thanks to Graham, Denise and Lisa.

touring canada, toronto, niagra, etc

Maid of the Mist, Niagra Falls, Canada (Buffalo and Horseshoe falls)

This year I was kindly invited to Canada by Tony and Anne McNeill who are the brother and sister in law of my very good friends Sandra and Jim. It took some doing getting me organised for the trip I can tell you, thank you to all concerned for crowbarring me out of Guisborough! As ever it was a last minute rush.

My main worry was flying, as I hate it. But in fact it was the best take off, landing and flight I had ever been on which was pretty amazing seeing as I was travelling alone for the first time in many, many years. I felt sad not having Phil there with me to make sure I was ok, holding my hand on the plane and enjoying the obligatory gin and tonics (mine’s a double please!!).

I was not in the country 24 hours when I saw one of the wonders of the world, at least in my eyes: Niagra Fall!!! Oh man that is truly a spectacular sight to see

No comment needed

Going on the Maid of the Mist was just fantastic I am going to do it again before I leave.

Then up to the top of the CNN tower the next day. My fear of heights was conquered at last. The lift took 58 seconds to get to the central part. The glass fronted lift was nowhere near as scary as I expected it to be. The view was worth it, wow.

I left Toronto and headed to Hamilton on the bus to meet Tony, Anne, Sandra and Jim. A warm and friendly Canadian welcome awaited me it was really wonderful being looked after and cared for my such lovely people. Especially as I had the obligatory holiday cold by this point. They took us to Crawford Lake and an Iroquain settlement found next to it. Really great. A night at the football was on the cards on Anne’s birthday too. Hamilton Tiger Cats v Seskatchewen Rough Riders. What an experience, so much atmosphere and excitement. A band was playing rocking music at the entrance and just everyone joining in having fun. The main difference was that fans from both sides sit together; which helped the opposition as I was recruited to change sides by a rough rider fan sat behind me, very funny.

The match was full on scoring straight away almost making it seem like the tiger cats would win?? Strangely enough the match stops for the adverts and cheerleaders come on to entertain………..never mind. The Incredible Hulk was in the crowd and after a few too many beers (yes you are allowed to take them into the seating area) he was shown a red hanky ( they drop these on the pitch when a foul is commited?) and escorted out by the police. The only sign of any bother, but quite funny really.

As with the Boro, the Tiger Cats snatched defeat from the jaws of victory………………… losing 25-32; good job I changed allegiance?

The next day we had a belly dancing session at the community centre which Anne had arranged. About 20 of her friends and neighbours turned up to shimmy and shake. Sandra put on a great show and had us all doing our funky stuff. It felt just like being on one of our wonderful belly dancing and yoga holidays.

It was sad leaving the gang behind and so great of Tony and Anne to make me feel so welcome in their beautiful home.

I headed back to Toronto on the bus to make my way onward to Ottawa on the train. Quite a journey. It took four and a half hours which passed quickly whilst chatting on the internet.

I arrived at Ottawa Jail Youth Hostel and found my cell to be big enough to share during my four day porridge…………two czech ladies and a portuguese woman. I hiked my way round the city and found the heat to be overwhelming. This took me by surprise as I expected Canada to be colder than home and had dressed accordingly. I had to stop and take off layers during the heat of the afternoon and enjoyed the view of the Rideau Canal, Parliament Hill and river.

a world of fun at argument cottage, football, football, football

It has been great to have my lovely spanish guests staying at argument cottage, guisborough. They arrived nearly two weeks ago when spain had beaten germany in the semi final of the world cup. My lovely nephew Jon Pollard prepared me for their arrival with a few lines of spanish……..I executed them so well that they spoke back to me in spanish, thanks to jonny…….vamos espana and well done to them for going all the way. The best team won the 2010 World Cup for sure!!

I have been very busy sorting out a second property for other guests coming from germany so it has been none stop; but great for business and tourism in guisborough so no complaints here.

I sorted the yard area and was decorating at 12 midnight for 2 nights in a row…..I have finally stopped and am able to relax which is just great.

In the meantime I have had time to get out and about and in particular went to the road racess at Oliver’s Mount in Scarborough. What a great day I had. I went with some good friends in my little car; they of course were on their bikes……never mind one day I will go on one……

Ryan Farqhar won 9 out of 9 races and was most definitely the star of the show and such a great man. Denise, Jon and I went into the paddock area to chat with him after the last race and of course to offer our congratulations too.

I got home just in time to watch spain beat holland in the world cup final- what a day!!

I am looking forward to doing lots more exciting and interesting things in the next few weeks whilst welcoming guests from Canada and Australia. It really has been a summer of international visitors at argument cottage, guisborough

a busy day at argument cottage, Skinningrove and Middlesbrough

Yesterday was particularly busy for me. I like to have lots to do, always have. It keeps the old grey matter buzzing and gets me out and about. I think it may have something to do with my sagittarian nature, but who knows………..?

Anyway, I got the day going with the usual brekkie whilst listening to the radio. Took a look in the yard………..then like a true workman/woman, assessed the situation and went back into the kitchen to finish my tea. The yard at home you see needs quite a lot of love and attention. One day!

I checked for argument cottage enquiries and emails and took myself out of the house for my walk on the beach at Skinningrove.

Every day I go for a walk on Skinningrove beach with my friend Denise and her lovely German shepherd Freida. The beach there is truly wonderful; one of the many hidden gems of this area. You park right at the bottom walk to the left, go under the bridge where the jetty is and there it is before you. Every day it is different (of course), some days the tide is right in like a tsunami up the beck side. That is my favourite tide.

Yesterday it was quite a way in but you could still see the spectacular beach. It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the end where you can sit and enjoy the view of the Cleveland Way and Cliffs or just gaze out to sea. I like to go in the sea and am training Freida to get over her fear of the water, a slow job but I am getting there.

I love my food so we took ourselves to Sheila’s shop in Skinny where I got a bacon and egg pie (scoffed it immediately) and steak pie. I was in pie heaven.

Off I went back to Guisborough and quickly changed and straight out of the house for my course at the University of Teesside- Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science. Really interesting if a bit odd. We did fire and explosions yesterday which was appropriate as Guisborough has seen a few of late!

I had to leave early as I had a visitTeesvalley Board meeting to attend and was a bit late. We have lots to get through. There is so much going on in the area, in particular the Tall Ships Race that is coming to Hartlepool in August. A free event for all which should prove to be spectacular. I love the sea and am looking forward to ‘walking the plank’! I have some great colleagues and wish them all well with the changes afoot.

I did a wee bit of shopping in the Boro (I hate shopping at the best of times). It was just a quick look round the charity shops and Primark, means I don’t spend much.

Back home by 6pm got the tea on the go and cleared out the ‘shed’, my back yard area. Or should I say I made a start at it, as there is so much to clear out and put right. I am taking the Captain’s (the ex cockateil) cage to sell at the pet shop, giving smithy his ladders back, going to the tip with some stuff and sorting the rest. I want to make it a nice area to go into and am thinking of getting a new clear roof and doors; we’ll see. as Phil would say!

Phew, then I set myself on the sofa for the footie, world cup semi final. I wanted Spain to win but would have been happy if Germany did. It just needed a good performance from either team. The first hafl was very poor but Spain stepped it up a gear in the second half and got the deserved goal, a header from Carlos Puyol. Great stuff.

So off to the quiz, late as usual? Got there in time for the music round which we didn’t win for once, some interlopers won it hehehehe. Anyway the picture rounds and misc did it for us and we came out a fiver better off each. Makes it a cheap night out I must say, an investment of a pound for a fiver return. Beats going to the bookies any day.

So off home for me and a quick check of the emails, facebook and messages then off to me pit.

A good day all in all I must say with an emotional moment at one point. All I can say is I hope all goes well today for a very good friend of mine. I am wishing him and his family all the very best and sending my love.

Bye for now Marip
p.s. forgot to mention did a bit of cleaning at Argument Cottage. How did I find the time?

Cameron Donald TT star with an Argument Cottage pen

Gorgeous Cameron Donald  holding my Argument Cottage Pen just about to write my postcard (not really but I would like to think that was who did it!!!!)

My friend Denise Nesbitt went to the Isle of Man TT races this month and gave Cameron Donald an Argument Cottage, Guisborough pen for signing all his autographs with. The lovely Aussie racer was so kind he let her take a picture of him with the Argument Cottage pen, what a star!

The Middlesbrough contingent of the Argument family are already firmly established in Australia- Sydney, Cairns, Canberra and Woolongong. Let’s hope Cameron spreads it further down under. Thanks to Denise for charming her way into the bike pits for the paparazzi moment with Cameron.

Hi Maria how are you writes Cameron??
